Photos at last

So I have become a facebook convert.  One of the things I like is how quick and easy it is to download photos.  So, for those of you who subscribe to this poorly neglected blog and would like to see some photos from Sudan and Kenya (there may also be a few from Uganda??), you can check out these links:  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=43531&l=66ee6&id=719991354 and http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=36539&l=cb5ed&id=719991354

I'm back in Kenya after a crazy ride in Uganda for a couple weeks following my crazy ride in Kenya for a few weeks.  Between Uganda and now I was in Sudan for 1 1/2 months.  I feel like I've hardly been there at all!  I'll be back in Sudan on the 10th of April - God willing.

Here in Kenya things are a lot calmer than in January.  One would be hard pressed to find physical evidence of the violence that occurred here in Nairobi (though I'm sure some areas are still struggling to recover).s

The Faris family, joining us in Sudan, have arrived here and are setting off with a couple of guys (Ed and Scott) who will, among other things, help the Farises build their home.  I'm sticking around these parts for another few weeks waiting for the next group coming up our way.  We have a couple of guys from our sending board (the FMB of the RPCNA) - Dave and David - and another young man (Daniel) who is also coming to lend the Farises a hand in helping to build their home.

Pray for the work in Sudan.  December was rough with the men we had been partnering with deciding to part ways with us.  Now we are praying, re-thinking and re-building our efforts.  Pray for the people of Aweil, S. Sudan.  Pray particularly for a couple of young men in our village of Parot - Teng and Alou - who have shown a keen interest in learning about the Word of God.  These young men are hard working and minimally educated.  It seems in these times the more educated the person is the more likely they are searching for the highest paid job around - usually western money.  We pray the God works an act of grace in the lives of Teng and Alou that would permiate through their whole lives; that they would love their families as Christ loves the church; that they would seek first the kingdom of God...

Ok, that's enough rambling for the day.

Peace,

Heather

The absence of new photos

Hi.  Ok I went to download some photos for you guys to enjoy today but my connection is WAY too slow for such things.  Ah the life...  Anyway, if you would like to see some of my recent photos (I don't really take many pictures) and a few I "stole" from Natalie Faris you can join facebook and become my friend (heatherhuizing@hotmail.com).  But you'd better hurry because I'm headed to Sudan in a couple of days, Lord willing, and I won't be able to accept your friend invites after that.

Peace in Christ,

Heather

Its funny how a life so different from the one you are raised in can become so normal; where a hostile environment doesn't seem scary, but more a nuisance because it means an entire change of plans; where changes of plans and building in a 'plan B' and a 'plan C' becomes so natural; where loss of life and destruction of property cuts to the heart, but is not surprising to the mind.  I know around the world the situation in Kenya has appropriately been highlighted in recent weeks.  Being here is a little weird but at the same time is just part of my life and life in Africa is a roller-coaster ride - but not always a fun one to be on.  The past 4 days or so I have been all over Nairobi - except to the slums - and things are pretty much back to the way they were.  This morning I even sat on a bus which was stuck in a 'jam' (as Kenyans call it).  Anyway things back 'home' in Sudan aren't much better.  There has been so fighting to the north of where we live.  More people have died in those skirmishes than the numbers that have died in Kenya.  But somehow I don't think it's getting the same publicity.  I guess people expect people in Sudan to die.  Hum, I think I must be feeling a bit melancholy this evening as my sarcasm is evidencing a bit of cynicism.  But in all of this I must not take my eyes off Christ.  He alone is never changing.  I don't need a plan B in serving Him.  He is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.  He is merciful and gracious to the poor and downcast - the forgotten ones.  It is easy to despair.  It is easy to get angry.  It is even easy to become hard  and  uncaring.  But to keep our eyes on our Savior is for some reason very challenging.  Oh Lord, change my heart daily that I might know you and love you more and more.  Make me to love your plans and long after the service you have called me to - even when it doesn't make sense.  Grant me the joy that surpasses all understanding!

Hi from beautiful Lake Naivasha.  Don't have much time but wanted to say a belated Merry Christmas to all!  Will write again soon.

It's been awhile

Well I'm back in Nairobi so I guess its time to write a few things about what's been going on. One great thing for me of late has been my parents have been with me both in Sudan and now down here in East Africa. They were in Sudan for 2 months and then we went to Zanzibar for a few days holiday and now we are just on the outskirts of Nairobi in Karen (named for Karen Blixen of “Out of Africa” fame) staying with some friends, Steve and Sandy Morad, who we know from William Carey International University (where I used to work in Pasadena, and now my mom volunteers there).

All of this has shown me once again that life is life, no matter where you are. Sure it is WAY different living in Sudan than in “The OC”. But at the same time, its not. You wake up in the morning, ask God to direct your day, put your hands to the plow of Kingdom work, and pray that the Spirit keeps your heart right and faithful and true. Some days I wake up and shake my head in disbelief that I am where I am, but other days I wake up and just start doing what I do as if it is the most normal thing in the world.

One thing I am grateful for is the fact that after 2+ years working in (and out of) Sudan God's creation is still new and exciting for me: the birds, the snakes, the sunsets, the cattle, the caterpillars... It is really quite a spectacular place, that, at first glance, may seem less spectacular than the reality within.

An addition to my house has been cement floors which are now painted (the walls are next – in bright colors of course!), a chain-link fence to keep the goats from decimating my garden, and two little kittens who are there for the express purpose of keeping unwanted visitors out (which they are now catching on to). It is amazing how big a difference cement floors, fences that don't get eaten by termites, kittens that do eat mice (etc.) and the like make for living life in Sudan for this California girl. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the BEAUTIFUL desk my dad made me.

All all of this is done as I get to participate in the expansion of the Kingdom of God. Witch doctors professing Jesus and putting away their bondage to Satan, communities gathering together to grow in physical and spiritual health, people from distant tribes which don't have a vital witness about Christ coming to us and coming to faith in the One True Savior... Sure I can complain to God about many things, but what a privilege to be a part of such a thing as this. It is nothing I can do in myself, but the fact that God wants to use me is awe inspiring. Now, if I can be awe inspired this way on a daily bases...
